Dr. Robert Butler Dies at Age 83

Dr. Butler, a renowned psychiatrist and aging expert, died of leukemia on July 4 at the age of 83. He was the founding director of the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health. He also co-founded and led the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, the Alzheimers Association and the International Longevity Center. He was the first to coin the term “ageism”. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his 1975 book Why Survive? Being Old in America.
